Plane crash into office building in Austin TX
« on: February 18, 2010, 11:21:49 AM »

Is being linked to the possibility that the pilot set fire to his own house this morning and then has crashed into a building here in North Austin (for you that came to AustinFest, you stayed in the hotel just across the highway from this building).  This building is part of the Echelon, which is a fairly large building that houses part of IRS (the division of IRS that handles cases of extreme back tax or evasion, last resort office).  Sad story, pray for the people involved and the emergency workers.

I interviewed for a job in that building a few years ago, and was actually offered it.  Thank goodness I went to ACC instead.

I just heard the pilot was being audited by the IRS, and the IRS offices where you go for audits was in the building.  From the looks of it, everyone is very lucky that there were not more injuries or deaths.  Binswanger Glass seems to be the heroes as there were a couple of their trucks with ladders in the complex at the moment of impact.  They immediately got their ladders and started evacuating people out of windows who were trapped by the flames.

Tami, we were eating out tonight and I saw the headline on CNN. I was so worried about you that I almost called, but was afraid to call just in case...

I'm so glad you and the family are okay!

Thanks Bandman!  We're fine....we're on the north side of town, but still not super close to where this happened.  The odd thing is, my mom and I go to lunch every Friday just down the street from this office building.  So had it been a day later, we would have been just blocks away....I actually found out from Ellyn this morning, who saw the report in St Louis (I didn't have the tv on here) and called to check on us (Thanks Ellyn!!)...turned on our local stations and it was on all three, plus several cable stations.  When my dad was still living, he worked in a department very similar to this one at IRS, but in a different location in town.  Investigating the crazy letters that get sent to the govt, etc....Made me wonder if he would have known any of the folks that worked at this IRS office...

I just heard Police Chief Art Acevedo on the radio say that someone in the IRS office saw the plane coming toward the building and started hollering for everyone to run.  He attributed the low number of casualties to that person.

It was such major news on the NYC stations.  Amazing that only two people died - the pilot and one worker in the building.

What is wrong with people? Wait......dont answer that.

Its just awful. So sad for all of the people affected by this.

Kinda makes me a little scared though. Everytime I get on a plane I think of 9/11. And, I happen to work in a tall building. We are all thinking around here, what if someone gets mad at our company and flys a plane into our building? I just dont understand how he could have thought that would be the solution to whatever problem he was dealing with .
