Overall I find Trip Advisor very helpful in researching a hotel, as long as it has a decent amount of current reviews. There are bogus reviews (I caught someone once) and downright ridiculous reviews. But I think most people can read through the BS. I do wish they had some way to better rate a resort. The IB Beach and DelMar are basically 3 star resorts, but people who feel like all their expectations were met can give it 5 stars, so it can be a little misleading. It's obviously not going to be the same level of experience as the Grand, yet both can get the same rating. But, that's where research comes in, and if done you shouldn't read about a place like the Lindo getting slammed cause "it's clearly not a five star resort."

I can't imagine planning a trip somewhere new without Trip Advisor.

Happy New Year All.

I also take TA with a grain of salt. As was mentioned some reports are obviously fabricated. I have read reports that sound like a completely different resort than what I am familiar with. There are also a number of people who self-promote their site(s) which is against the rules but it is a common offense.

I'll take the rough and tumble of the IB DelMar/Beach over the higher end resorts anytime. It was our first res =D>ort there and will always hold a special place in our hearts.

The DelMar was just an example. The same could be said for the Rui Yucatan and the Rui Riviera Maya. Or The Gran Porto Real and The Royal PDC. And on and on. If someone has a great time and a resort meets their expectations on Trip Advisor you can give it 5 stars all across the board, but they won't be the same experience and I think this is a flaw in TA's rating system.

If you want to see some good reviews on trip advisor I suggest that you go click http://www.tripadvisor.com/members-reviews/bandman  Laughing Rolling Eyes Very Happy/

You can read my reviews and tell that I have places that I like, and places that I don't like. I treat my reviews on TA the same way that I treat the trip reports I write here on this board. I hope that they help the people who read them.

I think that when I read reports/reviews on TA that I can sift through the garbage. I've been burnt a couple of times, but I also have read reports on this and other travel boards about places that I have had different experiences than the reviewers.

We are planning a trip to New York City in a couple of months. I have already started to sift through the reviews of places in New York. I'm not so much looking to the top rated restaurants, but looking for comments from people who sound like they like the same kind of places as we do. I'm not interested in 5-star fancy restaurants. I'm looking for those places where the locals go to eat because the food is consistant and the price paid is on par with the service and food qualities.
