Update on Chuck....

8/15.....  Chuck had his followup meeting with his doctors this afternoon.  He does have the most common form of pancreatic cancer.  Out of the 20 lymph nodes removed, they only found cancer in 1 of them.  So, he will undergo chemo starting in about 4 weeks, which should last for 6 months.  His doctors are optimistic and have new treatment from Europe that they would like to use, which they feel is giving promising results.  Going to be a bit of a haul, but with our continued prayers, he'll be lifted up!!

Oh tami, I'm so sorry to hear that it's cancer, but it's good the doctors are optimistic!   Prayers for him and his family

Though the outcome is cancer, having optimistic doctors IS a true blessing. My oncologist continues to offer me new treatments (meds), which to date, have been working.

Chuck continues to be in our prayer chain at church and I will add him to the chain that we started at the HHH Cancer Center here in Minneapolis.

They are doing pretty well.  They have enrolled their daughter in 9th grade out in California (after withdrawing her from schools out there for the move back to Texas), and planning on completing the 6 months of chemo out there.  I believe his meeting with the Oncologist is on the 8th and should start treatment shortly thereafter.  He's healing nicely and all are amazed at how quickly he has bounced back from surgery.  He's lost 40 pounds since the beginning of this, but sounds like that has levelled off somewhat.  His spirits are good...think just anxious to get this party started....

9/9/08  Chuck had his first meeting with his oncologist today.  They will begin chemo treatment next week.  Every Tuesday for 3 weeks and then 1 week off for the next 4 months.  Then, they will decide whether to follow with 5 weeks of daily radiation and chemo OR a continuation of the chemo that he would have just finished.  The treatment is good in that they don't expect him to lose his hair and supposedly very little side effects...primarily fatigue type stuff.  Other than that, he's trying to figure out a new diet since he's missing his gall bladder and some of his other "innards".  His old eating habits (like many of us have) need to be modified a bit, like the fatty stuff....He's got some dietary books for cancer patients.  Any tips?

Thanks for the update.  The only thing I would say is that, as wonderful as family, friends and "boardies" are for support, a Cancer support group would be very helpful.  It would be good for him to talk to other people going thru the same thing.

Did they have to take out part of his pancreas? Is he having to take insulin?

Yes, they did take the head of his pancreas, his duodunom, his gall bladder, and 20 lymph nodes.  He's not on insulin though (at least, not at this point)....

After a month of waiting on an unexpected test on his liver (they saw a "spot" that they wanted to check out before he was scheduled to start chemo in September), Chuck finally started chemo this week.  I believe we're in for 4 months of this to start.  The biopsy on his liver came back negative, was just a bruise from the initial surgery.  So THAT's a good thing.  Continued prayers for them, por favor!
